The Story Unfolds!

I have been out and about this past week meeting people and thought I would mention one of my outings. I went along to the Women in Business Luncheon hosted by the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce to hear Catherine Lockerbie talk about The Edinburgh International Book Festival.

As Director of The Edinburgh International Book Festival her talk was both witty and informative with a quiz thrown in for good measure. Not merely taking the role of leading the Book Festival, she is a passionate bookworm and wordsmith with an easy intellectual manner.

Taking place in Charlotte Square Gardens in Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town, this green oasis becomes a tented village squared by a road system crossable at your pearl! Once there, this nirvana of books and the meeting of erudite minds is a pleasurable change away from the hub bub of the other festivals.

When it first started in 1983 it was a biennial event which was sorely missed the following year. In 1997 it became a yearly event and a particularly welcome addition to the growing collection of Edinburgh Festivals; now 17 in total - I believe! Whilst “the island” village holds many fond memories for us all, perhaps there is a need for a new location - there is something to be said for books and space.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is scheduled to start on Saturday 9th August running through to the 25th August 2008.
