Licence

Runs May 6, 7, 8 and 13, 14, 15. 7.30pm (as part of Brighton Fringe)

Licence’ plots the last few days in the life of a pub, (partly based on troubled Woodingdean boozer ‘The Toby’, which lost its licence after a number of violent incidents), as told by landlord Bernie, “whose life is beer-soaked”. But when Bernie’s ten-year-old son Teddy takes to prophesising the collapse of “the industry”; “Best Mate” Ronnie to smacking the children in the kiddies area; & wife Margaret takes to the toilet, for almost an entire Eastenders episode …Bernie starts to lose his faith.

One man’s odyssey, to save his child, & his own sanity, from the sinister forces that he’s exposed them both to.

"Outstanding… a consummate actor… held the audience single-handedly in awe with his amazing multi-characterisations…Impeccably acted, completely convincing… …extremely amusing, profoundly sad…every nuance examined with finesse & intelligence. I cannot praise (it) enough. From the evident skill as an actor to the profundity & humour of his writing. A huge talent." Ian Reuben (Journalist)

Jonathan’s previous trilogy ‘The Father Monologues’, which premiered at Bridgwater Arts Centre, earned him a Best Male Performer Award nomination at the Brighton Fringe in 2007.

Brighton-born, Jonathan enjoys the autonomy of one-person plays, but is branching out for his next play. Set in Victorian East Brighton, it is the story of the digging of the world’s deepest hand-dug well (at 1300ft, deeper than the Empire State Building is high.)

For ‘Licence’, we’re running a competition, giving out blank fake DIY licences, and inviting people to “licence themselves” to do pretty much anything they want, giving free tickets to the best entries. More information on the website.

Contains strong language. Suitable for 12+ yr olds.

Tickets are available as follows:

£9 (£7) at Dome Ticket Office, on 01273 709709, or www.brightonfestivalfringe.org.uk, or on door.
