"She channels both Maria Callas and Janis Joplin" (The International Herald Tribune)
“Marika Klambatsea uses sound like a sharp instrument; her songs become weapons of many uses... a relentless hail of crystal-clear melodic fragments” (George Konstas – Director)
Marika Klambatsea is an award winning composer, pianist and soprano hailing from Greece. Incorporating jazz, contemporary-classical and operatic elements, her theatrical live performances have become famed for their visceral electricity and uncompromising delivery.
Returning to the UK after several successful Arts Council England supported visits, Klambatsea will be undertaking the musical journey of La Gitana (The Gypsy) in a rare solo show at this year’s Brighton Festival Fringe. Her vocals have been said to recall the past, echoing Edith Piaf, Maria Callas and Janis Joplin, but this forward thinking artist never fails to present something both contemporary and original.
Audiences can expect powerful and often political takes on everything from
classic arias to Billie Holiday tunes
