Exploring the obsessive, incestuous love of Annabella and Giovanni, this famous Revenge Tragedy is presented here as a 90 minute multi-media feast, utilising the traditional text alongside film, image and graphic design to offer an empathic realisation of forbidden, sibling, love. Original music sits alongside Monteverdi and Brian Eno to create a visceral soundscape against which the tragedy unfolds.
'Tis Pity She's a Whore' is UWE Independent Theatre Company's inaugural production. They performed in competition at 'Teatralny Koufar' International Student Theatre Festival in Minsk, Belarus, in October 2009, where 'Tis Pity' was nominated in the Best Director category and won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.
This award-winning production has played The Redgrave Theatre, Bristol, and Salisbury Playhouse, Salberg Studio, followed by selection for The Tobacco Factory's 'Edinburgh or Bust' preview season at The Brewery Theatre, Bristol, and North Wall Arts Centre, Oxford, in July 2010. Ali Robertson, Artistic Director of The Tobacco Factory, previewed the production in the Bristol Evening Post as 'a student show of uncommon promise'.
REVIEWS
TRADE UNION PALACE THEATRE, MINSK: BELARUS
UWE ITC "did justice to this controversial classic with courage and artistry - clear, beautiful, and with a superb mastering of text. The sensuousness and the violence in the play were splendidly balanced" Lief Olsen: Teatralny Koufar
SALISBURY PLAYHOUSE, SALBERG STUDIO: SALISBURY
“In this stunning production, the audience's sympathies veered between compassion and propriety – the depiction of the incestuous lovers was entirely convincing and the cast of recent student actors perform with a passionate fervour that makes this "revenge tragedy" instantly recognisable to a modern audience.” CP-W: Salisbury Journal
THE TOBACCO FACTORY, BREWERY THEATRE: BRISTOL
“By treating the story of these doomed lovers seriously and maintaining a penetrating honesty and rich symbolic imagery, Director Caroline Hadley gave her actors a fine, truthful framework in which to create their characters. The biggest test facing this company was could they hold the audiences' attention right through to the bitter end of this, at times, harrowing tale: the answer was a distinct yes”. Gerry Parker: Bristol Evening Post
"Powerful, unsettling" "fine, sensitive performances" Steve Wright: Bristol Venue Magazine
