We’ve put something a little special together for the Absolut Fringe, with a three course banquet of bands and soloists, and we’re serving in the city’s newest music venue.

Our tonal feast begins in a solo groove, with Justin Carroll turning away from the laptop orthodoxy, deploying instead a Fender Rhodes and an array of machines rescued from the dawn of the analogue age. To follow, bassist Ronan Guilfoyle brings his broad compositional experience in the classical and jazz world to bear in Trilogue, an improvising chamber group with Japanese pianist Izumi Kimura and Sarah Buechi. The lines between jazz and contemporary composed music are fractured, and Trilogue explore the cracks, embracing a range of textures, moods and dynamics outside the vocabulary of either genre.

To finish, a virtuosity pianist in a poetic trio setting.  Still in his early twenties, Cologne’s Pablo Held has an exceptional grasp of piano trio aesthetics, and seems to have few technical impediments to his artistic appetite. A prodigious talent, Held has been moving in the right creative circles since his early teens, and the trio's critically acclaimed CDs Forest of Oblivion and Music, confirm that he is maturing into an intelligent pianist with a mastery of light and shade, force and sensitivity. It's a special rhythm section too, featuring two young German musicians of stature in their own right, and Held's dialogue with bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel is intense and dynamic, alive to all the possibilities to manipulate time and texture.

Bring a healthy appetite!
