The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Celebrates Franz Liszt 200th Birthday with Concerts by International Piano Virtuoso Ang Li
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe will celebrate composer Franz Liszt’s 200th birthday with eight shows performed by internationally-acclaimed piano virtuoso Ang Li. Performances will take place from August 9th through August 23rd. Venues and times appear below.
Ang Li brings a program centred around the ‘Years of Pilgrimage,’ one of the most significant outputs of Liszt as a composer. Ang Li has chosen to include three pieces from the trilogy:-Sonetto 104 del Petrarca (Petrarch’s Sonnet 104); Les jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este (The Fountains of the Villa d’Este); and Après une lecture de Dante: Fantasia Quasi Sonata (After Reading Dante: Fantasia Quasi Sonata). The program also includes three other well-known genres by Liszt: Ballade, Consolations and opera transcription. The program will vary at each performance.
Ms. Li’s performance credits and talents reach well beyond her years. Her youth, talent, personality and audience appeal, truly make her one the world's rising classical piano stars. Her extensive repertoire ranges from early Baroque to contemporary piano music. Hailed as “a potential figure of huge significance on the international concert stage” by the Star-Telegram and “a revelation” by La Press Montréal, Ang Li made her first public appearance at Beijing Concert Hall at age six. Her performances at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe help to kick off her two-year world tour that include performances in India, China, British Columbia, and Ontario Canada and the United States including performances on Radio Television Hong Kong and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Her solo piano recording features compositions by LISZT, WAGNER, HAYDN, CHOPIN, DEBUSSY along with two Chinese traditional folk songs and will be available at all of her performances.
Join Ang Li at any of the venues below as she honors Franz Liszt on his 200th Birthday. “…From the opening sonorities of Liszt's 1867 arrangement of Wagner's Isolde's Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, we are in the presence of a magnificent interpretive artist. Ang Li's Liszt/Wagner is surging, ecstatic, multi-climatic, thundering, overpowering, tremulous. What more can one say?” - Emma Lou Diemer, Society News, U.S.A.
