‘Once in a generation a new musical comes along that changes everything’

New York Observer

Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group are proud to present Spring Awakening for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2011. Sheik and Sater’s revolutionary alternative rock version of Wedekind’s controversial masterpiece explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood of a group of teenagers bound by ‘the system’.

Spring Awakening helps marks the 50th anniversary of EUSOG, a dynamic and dedicated group of performers, most recently triumphing with Jonathan Larson’s Rent (Fringe Sell Out Show 2009) and Stephen Sondheim’s Company (***** Scotsman) at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2008.

“...five-star company EUSOG will undoubtedly have cynics dancing in the aisles”

Scotsman, Rent 2009

Premièring on Broadway in 2006, Spring Awakening fuses Sheik’s alternative rock score with Sater’s gritty book and lyrics culminating in the unforgettable numbers ‘Mama who bore me’, ‘Don’t do Sadness’ and ‘Totally Fucked’. Winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor, Spring Awakening tells the story of a group of repressed young adolescents discovering their sexuality in a narrative that features suicide, sexual sadism, abortion, homosexuality and flagellation.

Spring Awakening’s compelling portrayal of adolescent difficulties has lost none of its impact, and thus EUSOG are delighted to be supporting Papyrus, a charity who strive to prevent young suicide and support those affected by it.
