PRESS RELEASE 1
FOR
“11” – A POWERFUL AND CHALLENGING NEW MUSICAL
Edinburgh based Cutting Edge Theatre Productions are presenting the World Premiere of “11” in this, the 10th anniversary of the horrific events on September 11th in New York 2001.
“11” is a powerful, challenging and inspiring new musical weaving the stories of people who have experienced war and terrorism over the last century and the effect it has on their lives. Original songs and music by Ian Hammond Brown, composer/lyricist of the sell-out production of ‘Whisky Galore - A Musical’ which was produced by Cutting Edge Theatre in 2006. This show was then picked up by Pitlochry Festival Theatre where, after further development, it broke all box office records in their history. “11” is written by Suzanne Lofthus, who has also worked with Ian Hammond Brown on the large scale musical “Blude Red”
“11” is set in a bombed out building – we have no idea where or when but the stories of War unfold around 6 characters. World War 1 is told through the lives of Charlie, a 17 year old soldier in the bloody trenches of France and his young girlfriend Carla
The impact of World War 2 is seen through the eyes of some children in Glasgow, through Helena, a young woman who has been transported to Auschwitz and Lukas – a German Nazi officer
Weaving through all these lives are the stories of Riq and Sheza – a modern day couple living in the USA. Through them we see the horror of modern warfare but from a totally different perspective.
There are many questions in the passionate script and score such as “Why are young men and women still dying overseas in wars that we don’t understand?”; “Is one man’s martyr another man’s terrorist?” and “Are we ever told the truth or simply manipulated through carefully placed propaganda?”
“11” may not answer the questions, but we live in a world that currently is experiencing unparalleled unrest and maybe, just maybe – one day we will find peace. With a cast drawn from the UK, “11” promises to be one of the most thought provoking productions in the Fringe this year.
