Marika Klambatsea Presents
The Trains
“This concert is an attempt to approach the songs and music composed in the ghettos and in the Nazi concentration camps, by adding alongside them music that was also written during those dark times, and thus move us with the painful memories they carry with them, as well as inspire us with their inexhaustible strength.” Marika Klambatsea
Marika Klambatsea is a soprano, composer and pianist well known for her musical interpretations of classical pieces as well as her free vocal improvisations. The Trains will take the audience on a musical journey of songs sung in the concentration camps of WWII Germany, and more familiar pieces by Mahler, Gorecki, and Weill. Marika is inspired by renowned minimalist composer Steve Reich and his work ‘Different Trains’ which will be played by a string quartet throughout the performance.
The Trains will paint a picture of the struggle felt by those in concentration camps through the medium of folk and classical music. The piece will shed a spotlight on some forgotten and previously banned works, Yiddish songs , such as the lullaby Makh zu die Eygelekh (Close Your Eyes), as well as the song Yisrolik, with its immensely powerful lyrics. Marika will also sing songs by Aleksander Kuliesiewitz of Poland, one of the few singers that survived the Concentration camps. In order to add a personal dimension to the piece, the soprano will also perform some of her own compositions.
The Trains will also tell the story of soprano Fania Fenelon, who worked as a cabaret singer in 1943, until she was apprehended by the Nazi regime, transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp and assigned to the camp’s orchestra. Here she was obliged to sing Puccini s “Madame Butterfly”. Klambatsea will sing excerpts of the Aria of” Un bel di Vedremo” playing the part of Fenelon. The combination of live music and theatre will make for an intriguing and moving performance.
