Coreen Scott: Scott’s Abroad

SCOTT’S ABROAD

St John Church venue 127 (corner of Lothian Rd & Princes St)

on Thursday 25th August at 4pm and Saturday 27th August at 6pm.

Featuring Coreen Scott and friends.

Enjoy the warm and mellow tones of singer Coreen Scott as she explores her favourite songs from Scotland and further afield in an impressive programme that draws influences from a range of musical styles all connected by a contemporary traditional theme. Sit back, relax and let the soaring sound of Coreen’s beautiful melodic voice soothe and uplift you. Some of Coreen’s musical friends and collaborators will join her on stage including gifted young harp player Aislinn Faulkner, violin player, Laure Paterson, double bass player, Carole Melrose and guitarists Jonny Gibbs and Alasdair Morrison.

Coreen explains: “I am probably best known for my interpretation of Scottish songs, but I wanted to include some new and different material in this show. I have been doing a lot of work with a pedal harp player and wanted to have some of those influences which reflect my original training in the show, but with a traditional feel. I have also been performing further afield recently including a great concert in Paris, and inevitably you pick up new influences and materials on your travels, so I wanted to include some of the newer material too. There will be touches of contemporary and jazz in the programme, but it will be firmly rooted in traditional music. I am also delighted to be working again with the fabulous musicians who appeared on my cd A Scottish Journey”.

PREVIEW

Be you an experienced explorer or an armchair traveller, “Scott’s Abroad” (a neat take on the McCalmans Scottish folk song) is a wonderful musical journey of Scottish, traditional, contemporary and international songs.

Coreen’s melodious voice was perfectly pitched in the vaulted ceiling of The Great Hall which created the perfect “surround sound” along with fellow musicians: Aislinn Faulkner on pedal harp; Gavin Pagan on mandolin and viola; Carole Melrose on double bass and Alasdair Morrison & Jonny Gibbs on guitar.

Their musical journey started off with Christine’s McVie’s beautiful “Song Bird“. “Black is the Colour” followed then “Autumn Leaves” sung rather sumptuously in French and then in English. From France to South Africa with “Say It’s Not True” (Roger Taylor’s song about Aids in Africa) to”Long Journey Home” written by Elvis Costello & Paddy Maloney, a brooding anthem about the Irish and British leaving their shores for a better life abroad.

Alasdair Morrison got the audience joining in with that old favourite, “Whiskey in the Jar” as well as singing that very song itself, “Scots Abroad“. A perfect summer’s evening drew to a close with a couple of old favourites, Dougie MacLean’s rousing “Caledonia” and that well known traditional heart stirrer, “Loch Lomond“.

Reviews from Coreen’s 2008 Fringe appearance Written & directed by BAFTA winner Andrew Dallmeyer, music by Laverock.
"Singer Coreen Scott and local folk band Laverock add some beautiful renditions of traditional and modern songs,"

The Scotsman, 07 August 2008 By Sally Stott "The show was peppered with songs of the era. Johnny Cope and White Cockade, together with a host of others were flawlessly performed by Laverock, led by the angelic voice of Coreen Scott." Edinburgh Evening News, 22 August 2008 By Martin Lennon "Music is an integral part of the show and the traditional Scots songs are sung beautifully by Coreen Scott, accompanied by Laverock. The Fringe is an international event and it is good to be entertained by a topic that is truly Scottish, a reminder of our cultural roots." Edinburgh Guide, 08 August 2008 By Barbara Bryan
